Overview

Mortadella Head Wellesley offers a refreshing take on suburban pizza and sandwiches from its spot on Washington Street. Known primarily for its specialty pizzas, this pizza restaurant brings bold flavors and generous portions that stand out in the Wellesley area, a place not typically known for standout pizzerias.

The menu is anchored by inventive specialty pizzas like The Pig Pen, featuring pulled pork, bacon, and bbq sauce, as well as the Pesto Chicken Pie, which layers garlic cream sauce, fresh tomato, and basil pesto atop a crisp crust. Patrons appreciate the option between round and Roman-style pizzas, catering to different crust preferences—though some find the round crust a bit thick. Each pizza arrives oversized and rich with toppings, making them hearty enough to share.

Beyond pizza, Mortadella Head shines with its large, fresh sandwiches such as the Italian with prosciutto and the Baller sub filled with homemade meatballs that bring a genuine, homemade touch. Their mozzarella sticks offer a unique spin, coming in larger, log-like sizes, which suits those with a hearty appetite, though some may find the breading thick.

Customer experience is enhanced by the friendly and attentive staff, highlighted by commendations for individuals like Ashlin at the counter. While the restaurant is mainly takeout-focused with limited dining space, customers suggest that adding salads to the menu and enlarging the seating area would enrich the experience and encourage more frequent visits.

The setting suits locals and families looking for quality, casual dining or a reliable takeout option. It is a convenient destination for those who want fully loaded specialty pizzas and substantial sandwiches without venturing to the more crowded culinary hubs. Though the space is small and the doorway design causes some frustration when managing large orders, the overall impression remains strongly positive. Mortadella Head Wellesley impresses with its flavor profiles, portion sizes, and approachable service, positioning itself as a growing favorite in the suburban pizza scene.

I love pizza and I have to say it's really hard to find good pizza in the suburbs especially the Wellesley area. Mortadella Head is definitely one of the better pizza places I've been to in the 'burbs. I really liked that they had a large variety of specialty pizzas plus you have the option of two different pizza styles (round or roman). If you like your crust on the crispy side you'll like this pizza. Still, the crust was kind of too thick for my tastes on the round pizza. The sauce they use is tasty and they're not stingy on the toppings. The pizzas are definitely oversized too. I ordered two pizzas for three adult men expecting to have some leftover and only one pizza was consumed because these pizzas are so big and filling. I've also tried some of their subs which were good and I recently ordered their "mozzarella sticks" which I'm putting quotes around because these are not traditional mozzarella sticks. They're more like mozzarella logs. They're easily 3-4x's as thick as a typical mozzarella stick and twice a long. For me, this was just way too big and the breading layer was too thick plus they only gave me one tiny little dipping sauce container of tomato sauce for this mountain of cheese they sold me. Definitely not enough! Overall, I thought the food was very good at this restaurant. The staff was SUPER friendly and accomodating. My two largest critiques are . . . I wish it was a bigger space with some tables and I wish they had salads on their menu. They already have lettuce on hand for sandwiches so why not? If this place had salads, I'd definitely visit more often. For just pizza orders though . . . it's my new "go to" in Wellesley.

I did takeout from the Wellesley location. The Italian (the one with prosciutto) was excellent. The meats and cheese were of high quality and in abundance. Loved it with the arugula and roasted red peppers. Best I have have outside of the North End.

The Perfect Cheese lives up to its reputation. The only thing I will change for next time is to leave off the extra basil on top (only because of my very Irish palette that shy away from spices) but I assume that is an easy ask through the comments when ordering. Also got the Italian with the cheesy garlic bread and have been informed it's a 2 Will be back and will recommend

Excellent, large sandwiches and the pizza is fine too. Great quality for a reasonable price. Mostly a takeout place but some people choose to eat there. This is one of the first places that come to mind when I think of excellent sandwiches. Ashlin, the young lady behind the counter is friendly, generous and responsive.

The pizza was amazing! The meatballs in the baller sub were definitely homemade. They were so light and fresh. The one drawback I found with the place was the fact that the door opened inward instead of out. I had a large order with a few pizzas and a bag. It was a struggle to get out and nobody ( including a couple of customers standing right near the door) helped me open the door.
